When a bird house is not a home.

I always get a kick out of this birdhouse, located in someone's side yard here in SL. First, a disclaimer: I pretty much like any birdhouse, from old ones that even the birds have written off, to new ones in which all the popular birds vye to get into as though it were some kind of aviary Studio 54. This house is kind of charming, a model I wouldn't mind living in if it were adult-size. That said, how easy can it be to put seeds in this thing? Far as I can tell, it requires a ladder, and only the most dedicated bird fancier is going to climb a ladder on a regular basis. I never see birds hanging around this feeder, and I think what happened is that they got wise to the fact that this particular birdhouse did not live up to the hype.

Do I exaggerate, or is this bridhouse a little high up? And if you're going to ask a bird to expend precious winter calories, don't you think there should be a little seed payoff once they get there? A little sumptin' sumptin' that says "welcome, I am happy you came, and please come again." This should not be asking too much.

The birdhouses featured below, on the other hand, are part of an art installation (I think) in a downtown park. Not for a minute would I, or any bird I think, believe that food was part of the deal here. In short: no false advertising, as in the pernicious set-up exposed above.

And because I want this post to end on an up-note, here's a one-eyed snowman. And that's all for now...
