Flannel pyjamas, the thick flannel maroon L.L. Bean shirt I gave my Dad for Christmas years back, the one I sometimes now wear myself. Besides being incredibly soft and warm, I think flannel is a fabric that many people have a connection to, be it memories of the guys in highschool who carefully rotated their favourite plaid shirt with another so they weren't wearing the same one every day, or new PJs bought especially for the first grade on-stage rendition of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas. Although lots of adults switch to seemingly more "sophisticated" fabrics in sleepwear, I think anyone who grew up in the North East has a deep appreciated for, you no doubt guessed it, flannel.
This is all to say that every winter for at least the last five winters I have pulled out these amazingly thick, warm fruit covered sheets I bought on sale via the Garnet Hill catalogue. (Fruit covered!) I am by no means a sheet freak, but damn, their sheets are fiiiine! It's kind of fun to look forward to the weather turning cold enough to pull out these sheets in late fall, and in the spring when the temperatures rise high enough I regretfully put them away for another six months. I own one pair of flannel sheets, and this is it. Much as it would be handy to own a second pair, it would kind of take away from the pleasure I derive from knowing these are my go-to, ever-dependable, partner-in-crime-against-a-chilly-winter-bed sheets. I love them, and as you might see, Rupert the cat goes a little nuts when I put them on the bed. Final word: flannel sheets get two thumbs up.
